Rehab Models and Treatment Modalities
By now you may have found out
that there are many different models of private drug rehab programs. The
differences in treatment approaches can be slight or they can be on opposite
ends of a spectrum. These could include how addiction is viewed, the length of
the rehab program, the accomodations of the clients and how the patients are
treated. Here are a few of the main rehab models of today for you to compare
and then call us at 1-877-372-5719 for more information.
The Biophysical Rehab Model
The biophysical rehab model had its early formation in the
mid-1960's, with its current approach developing in the late 1970's. It is
based on the groundbreaking scientific discovery that toxic chemicals such as
drugs actually leave residues behind in the body that store in the tissue and
continue to create barriers for an individual's permanent recovery. These
residuals can produce effects such as mood swings, impaired mental ability and
even mild to severe physical cravings. By removing the residues these barriers
are lifted so that the individual can then fully benefit from the educational
courses and individual counseling that take place during the second half of the
program. The biophysical drug rehab model is non-traditional and does not use
any substitute drugs or medications in its treatment. It also believes
addiction can be fully handled once and for all and does not have to be a
life-long process of being "in recovery." This program continues to demonstrate
a higher level of success.
The Minnesota Model
Most 12-step programs are
patterned after or at least loosely based on something called the Minnesota
Model. This came from the formation of a well-known 12-step program in
Minnesota back in the late 1940's and early 1950's. This program is often only
28 days in length and follows the disease theory of addictin that believes
relapse is a part of the recovery process and that it is a battle taken one day
at a time. Clients are also asked to acknowledge or render themselves powerless
against drugs and alcohol. The upside to this approach is that clients are able
to try and help each other through the process, which has merit and is done in
many other types of programs as well. This model does not have a very high
permanent success rate, but it does work for some people. Over the years this
approach has been added to and altered many times over and a common practice in
this day and age is to give prescription drugs to addicts for maintenance or to
only treat their symptoms.
The Malibu Model
Along a stretch of coasline in southern California, Malibu is home to more than two dozen resort-style rehab getaways that include private chefs, opulent decor and spa-like comfort. While the treatment aproach varies between different philosphies, they are still generally only about a month long and are at the top of the price range for rehabilitation facilities, some possibly as high as $70,000 + for a 30-day stay. These programs are often where celebrities will go given the privacy, cost, location and accomodations. Similar to the previous approach, many of these programs use pharmacotherapy in their treatment program, which means they may prescribe more drugs to addicts. It is our experience that many of these drugs actually cause relapse due to their own abuse potential or side effects. Despite some of the high profile clientele, the Malibu model doesn't have a standard verifiable success rate.
The Florida Model
While the Florida Model is a modified version of the two above, it doesn't have to subscribe to any particular treatment philosophy either. It generally means people coming from out of the area and continuing a longer-term treatment program but living in a revery home or sober house instead of staying in residential treatment. Because of this, some programs that use the Florida Model are able to provide private rehab services at a somewhat reduced rate because the number of staff needed around the clock is minimal.
